There is now a fix button in the top left of chat. Pressing this will attempt to fix things. Useful when youtube has got its knickers in a twist and the player has an overlay stuck on it for no reason.
The you tube player now uses the youtube html5 api, so will possibly work without flash if you opt in here http://www.youtube.com/html5 and the video you wish to play contains no adverts.
Room and user lists should sort by level then by name.
News tab on top right will contain important news and updates, like this one.
A quick google to see if "gorden freeman bennett" is a well used term since it seems like such an obvious gag. The only thing I hit is a comment in some gameartfag aftermath so I guess it's not been used much.
But FFS is it impossible to ignore this gameartfag crap?
Just die already with the promotion of first year art student tripe as if it means that games are finally a worthwhile artistic medium.
Of course games are art, games "journalism" however is not and never will be no matter how much you treat it like a creative writing course.
actually scrap that. make a gallery or museum specifically for the medium and little else then promote it via david bowie, stephen fry and elmyr de hory. i mean, isn't art measured by the by-products it produces?
I just got bit by this strange java appengine bug.
Store a Boolean.FALSE value in memcache. (I'm using the lowlevel API)
Retrieve this value from memcache.
(value instanceof Boolean) is still true
(value.booleanValue()) is still false
( Boolean.FALSE.equals(value) ) is no longer true
It seems it comes out of memcache as a slightly different false value?
Maybe this is normal Java serialise/unserialise behaviour?
This came as a bit of a shock to me since the value I was caching was of the admin=false setting in a users session. So this bug granted admin abilities to everyone (Yay!) and was only triggered when I added some better caching to the user sessions.
Anyhow I'm all fixed now that I've worked out what I think was going on but it stills seems to be strange behaviour.
Since it was the IGF again, here's a topical game of ours http://only1.wetgenes.com/ I still think it is quite a nice little adventure with a happy ending and cooking and pointless quests and scary photography and sashimi and full of adventure references that no one understands. Not to mention the fact that the loading noise is manic miner and well I guess we just put too much shit into everything. :)
Have finally got around to emailing the owners of a boot-strapp instance whenever anyone makes a comment anywhere on it. As I suspected this is more complicated than it needs to be but is now working provided you setup a mail.from address along the lines of mail.from="firstname.lastname@example.org" in your global admin options.
Ignore FGL in that thread, they are as big a part of the problem as spil group. Even if they think they are the good guys, they are really just middle men. I suspect we can chart the rise of FGL with the commoditization and failure of flash games.
My lack of backwards letter understanding means I have no idea what is going on at http://sb-games.com/?p=223 but I'm pretty certain it is an interesting game and worth a download. Press 1 to unsheath sword and then ctrl to attack.
Apparently movies suck because of "attention spans and narrative tastes were already being recalibrated by MTV and video games."
Which is strange because I'm pretty sure games suck because of movies and movies of games suck because of ewwww a boil.
Not to mention that the MTV of the past is now considered a sacred place. A place free of the horrors of reality TV. A place where strange narrative animation was nurtured (even if the animation wasn't very animated).
So yeah yeah the film industry is shit, so is the games industry so is the music industry. Can you see the word that keeps getting repeated? Maybe that word is the one causing the problem.
Steam is a gated content provider in the same way that consoles are a gated content provider. In order to get content through these gates you need to suck the right cock.
No matter how good a game it still has to suck this cock in order to get onto steam. Maybe it does so by proxy of a publisher but it still does it.
Most developers would love to have their game on steam, it is more distribution visibility etc. This is however often not an option, steam says no, because steam is special and steam picks and chooses only the best.
This is an example of how power in the games industry has been shifting from publisher to distributer.
What this also means is that steam can be held 100% responsible for choosing the content in has available and promotes.
The Nigerian prophecy : A film about a man contacted one day out of the blue by a strange and unknown friend of the family. He discovers that he is the heir to a vast Nigerian fortune and destined to save the world.
I link to this because I can remember wanting to make a similar game on the c64 almost 30 years ago. I was thinking more of a puzzle than this one, with strength timers on each of the grips to keep it fast.
On another note I always wondered why qwop and his other games got so much indiefag press. Most flash games are ignored and these are by no means exceptional. Neither do they fit the indiefag game mould.
One more click and we have a reasonable handle on the situation.
It seems that SVN finally pushed me over the edge so I'm giving HG a try again. http://hg.4lfa.com/ should now be the most up to date public facing code. Looking good so far, anyone wanna try a clone and build? the latest avatar editor is in there.
Base installs of debian seem to bitch about locale all the time something like the following will set it and get it to hush "export LC_ALL="en_US.utf8" also check en_US.utf8 is installed with "locale -a"
All of the server code has been moved again. again. again. Mostly living in HG now. Please to be complaining about anything this breaks. Also we should now see less spammy looking imported post titles in the forum.
